Pueblo West’s Dustin White carded a 4-under-par 67 on Monday to lead a Colorado Golf Association-hosted qualifier for the men’s U.S. Open at Walking Stick Golf Course in Pueblo.

White and five others qualified for a U.S. Open sectional qualifier at Columbine Country Club in Littleton in June.

White finished one stroke ahead of Northglenn’s Dustin Mills and Pueblo West’s Michael Zaremba. Carbondale’s Adam Joiner, Denver’s Charles Soule and Boulder’s Mike Troyer tied for fourth at 69.

Ball State hires Packard.

Kelly Packard, former coach of the Colorado Chill of the National Women’s Basketball League and a longtime assistant at Colorado State, was hired as the women’s coach at Ball State. Packard compiled a 34-12 record with the Chill in 2004-06, winning league championships both seasons. She previously was an assistant at Colorado State in 1991-93 and again in 1996-99, helping the Rams to a 33-3 record and an NCAA regional tourney appearance in 1999.

Teply becomes offensive coordinator.

The Western State football team promoted third-year assistant coach C.J. Teply to be the team’s offensive coordinator, coach Pat Stewart said.

Teply, who was a passing coach last season, replaces Duke Iverson, who left the team two weeks ago.

Fort Lewis second in cycling championships.

The Fort Lewis cycling team raced to a second-place finish in the Division I omnium standings at the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships on Saturday in Fort Collins.

Lees-McRae (N.C.) College took top honors and Colorado State was third. Colorado finished seventh.

CSU’s Phil Mann won the men’s criterium and was second in the overall men’s standings with 223 points. Lees-McRae’s Andrew Talansky won the men’s individual title with 244 points.

Carla Swart of Lees-McRae won the women’s title with 281 points. CSU’s Amanda Miller was fourth at 208, and Fort Lewis’ Amy Dombroski was fifth at 205.

Colorado Mines was fourth in the D-II standings behind first-place Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
