LAKEWOOD, Colo.—D’Evelyn’s Kevin Williams shattered his Class 4A record in the 3,200 meters Saturday, running an impressive 9:06.27 to win his third straight state championship in the event.

Williams, a senior, nearly set an all-classification record, just missing the state best 9:05.89 set by Brent Vaughn of Smoky Hill in 2003.

He did manage to beat his 2007 4A record time of 9:19.83, kicking hard across the finish line.

In boys team competition, Longmont won its first state championship since 1950 with 78 points. Second-place Sierra had 68 points, while Mullen (61), Battle Mountain (43) and last year’s champion Cherokee Trail (40) finished the top five.

Longmont, which has won five boys track titles in school history, outran Sierra in the 1,600 meter relay, winning with a time of 3:19.14 to 3:20.63. The Trojans were also led by Matt Butcher, who won the 200 meter dash in 21.28 seconds.

The Thompson Valley girls also scored 78 points en route to their first track championship. The Eagles also managed to set a state classification record in the 1,600-meter relay, posting a time of 3:54.45. The old record, established by Lewis-Palmer in 2004, was 3:55.70.

Mullen, last year’s state champ, finished in second with 64 points. Longmont (45), Alamosa (44 1/2) and Broomfield (41), rounded out the top five.

Conifer junior Emily Blok also had an impressive day, winning state championships in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash. She also finished second in the long jump.
