DENVER—The Rocky Mountain Lobos beat the Air Academy Kadets 13-7 in game 2 of a double elimination tournament to win their second straight Class 5A baseball championship Saturday night.
Air Academy forced the second game after beating the Lobos 8-3 in the first game earlier in the day at All-City Field. The Lobos capped a 23-4 season and became a rare 5A repeat winner.
Their victory came against a resilient Air Academy team which turned in a half-dozen comebacks of note throughout 2008.
“They would not go away,” Lobos coach Scott Bullock said. “Every time we did something, they came back.”
The Lobos’ character evolved after the 8-3 setback. They jumped to a 4-0 lead in the second game and plated all of their runs in the first four innings.
Lobos senior Andy Burns, who eagerly awaits the amateur draft next month, had a couple of uncharacteristic errors at shortstop, but began the game with a double, later hammered a rocket home run and came on in relief of sophomore starter Marco Gonzales, who notched his second consecutive title-game victory, to seal it.
For the Kadets (24-3), their first title shot since 1989 was fun to watch, enjoyed a large following and was suspense-filled.
