The University of Denver women’s golf team was tied for fourth, three shots behind the co-leaders, when second-round play was suspended Wednesday at the NCAA Golf Championship in Albuquerque.
The Pioneers were the first team on the University of New Mexico Championship Course and benefited from relatively good conditions. Play was suspended because of high winds at 1:10 p.m. MDT, resumed at 3:15, then suspended for the day just before 5. The co-leaders, Southern California and UCLA, were done at 8-over-par 584. Alabama was third at 9-over, with Tide players on the third through fifth holes. DU is in the clubhouse at 11-over 587. Texas A&M is also 11-over, with players on the sixth through eighth holes. Twelve of the 24 teams finished play.
USC’s Belen Mozo shot a 4-under 140 to lead by one in the bid for individual champion. DU’s Stephanie Sherlock was tied for eighth at even-par 144 after shooting a 73. Teammates Chelsea Benton and Katie Kempter were tied for 11th, a stroke behind Sherlock.
Four area players on Division II all-region baseball team.
Metro State catcher Reece Gorman and outfielder Jake Palmer joined Mesa State third baseman Kyle Hogue and designated hitter Matt Miller on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association Division II all-West Region first team.
CC football names offensive coordinator.
The Colorado College football team hired Tim Taylor as its offensive coordinator, coach Bob Bodor announced. Taylor held the same job at Wisconsin-River Falls and at Clark Atlanta. He succeeds Max Hawsey, who left the Tigers to become head coach at Grinnell (Iowa) College.
Denver’s Johnston falls in 10th.
Edner Cherry scored a 10th-round knockout against Denver native and former two-time WBC lightweight champion Stevie Johnston at the Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base in Jacksonville, N.C.
Cherry (24-5-2, 11 KOs) dropped the 35-year-old Johnston (42-6-1, 18 KOs) in rounds three and nine before leveling Johnston with his “Cherry Bomb” right hand in the 10th.
