Seniors Cameron Browne of Bear Creek and Mallory Duran of Windsor were named male and female student-athletes of the 2007-08 school year Wednesday at The Denver Athletic Club’s annual banquet.
Both were three-sporters, rarities in this era of specialization, and active within their schools and communities.
Browne, a two-way Bears lineman, will play next season at Princeton. Also on the basketball and track teams, he was student-body president and had a 3.9 grade-point average among a long list of accolades.
“In the end, it was all worth it,” Browne said.
Duran, a speedy, powerful outfielder who led the Wizards to the 2006 Class 4A softball title, also is valedictorian. She will play softball next season at Southern Illinois.
“I was just keeping my priorities straight and making sure I was getting everything done,” Duran said.
The two were chosen from weekly selectees that began in September. It is sponsored by The Denver Post, The DAC and 9News.
The DAC also honored Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and former Colorado State football coach Sonny Lubick.
Tulowitzki, still sidelined with a hip injury, helped lead the Rockies to the 2007 World Series. He said his rehabilitation is progressing and hopes to return soon.
He was honored as The DAC’s professional athlete of the year. Lubick, who brought stability as well as success to the Rams, was selected for career achievement.
The DAC’s annual awards went to Emily Naes, youth female athlete of the year; Trey Eckloff, a Cherry Creek basketball star bound for Colorado’s Buffaloes, the top youth male; Rachel Tobey Nottingham, female athlete; Tom Evans, male athlete; Jane Oberg, master female; and Mike Roth, master male.
