“The Cheap Bastard’s Guide to New York City” ($14.95, Globe Pequot Press) is just what it sounds like: a book for penny-pinching folks who want to tour the Big Apple.
Author Rob Grader is a native New Yorker who has sought out every freebie — more than 1,000 — that he could find, from concerts and museums to haircuts and yoga classes, and he shares the goods and the links to more.
Hungry but poor? Stop in at one of the many spots that set out copious platters of samples.
Thirsty for culture? The productions staged at the New York University Graduate Acting Program (a few famous alums include Billy Crudup, Marcia Gay Harden and Barry Bostwick) by the second-year students are gratis.
There’s a section for kid-friendly ideas, pets and medical needs too.
