LONDON — Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his faltering governing party faced a vital test in a special election Thursday, where the death of a longtime Labor Party legislator has opened the door to a possible Conservative victory.

The results of the election in the Crewe and Nantwich district, in northwestern England, have national significance as Brown tries to recover from devastating Labor Party setbacks in local elections earlier this month and from nationwide polls showing grave doubts about his leadership.

The most recent local surveys show the Conservative Party with a lead heading into the Crewe and Nantwich vote. Results were expected to be announced today.
