As the losses mount, so do the injuries.
Rockies all-star left fielder Matt Holliday strained his left hamstring running to first base on a groundout in the ninth inning of the Rockies’ 9-2 loss to the Mets this afternoon.
“I felt it grab a little bit, we’ll see how it feels tomorrow,” Holliday said. “It’s tough to tell right now, I’ve got ice all over it.”
Holliday hasn’t had a hamstring problem before, so he isn’t sure how serious the injury is.
Holliday’s injury is just the latest in a slew of setbacks for the Rockies. Third baseman Garrett Atkins was scratched from today’s starting lineup less than a half hour before the game because of a stiff neck.
“It got really stiff during batting practice in the cage,” he said. “I couldn’t turn my head enough to look at the pitcher, so there was no way I could be in there today.”
Atkins said he has been dealing with muscle stiffness in his neck for the “past couple of weeks,” but said it flared up worse today.
“Hopefully I won’t be out long,” he said. “They gave me some medication which should help the muscles relax. We’ll see how it feels tomorrow.”
Prior to the game, shortstop Clint Barmes (sprained right knee) and right fielder Brad Hawpe (strained right hamstring) were placed on the 15-day disabled list. Barmes has a sprained medial collateral ligament and said he expects to be out 2-4 weeks. Hawpe should be back in less than two weeks.
