Tommie Smith, left, and John Carlos will receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs. On the medals stand at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, the duo raised their black-gloved fists and bowed their heads during the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Both were expelled from the Games. “Arthur Ashe was a great American and a credit to his race, which is the human race,” Carlos said.
