The discovery over the past two months of four dead skunks with rabies in Eastern Plains counties has led to a state health department advisory amid concern the disease may be moving toward the Front Range.
Pet owners are advised to be sure vaccinations for their dogs and cats are up to date. In the past year there have been eight confirmed cases of rabies in the eastern part of the state — seven in skunks, one in a coyote.
The most recent cases were in Kit Carson, Yuma and Adams counties. Two cases involved attacks on pet dogs.
