Make your hotel stay greener:
Eco-travel is a growing industry, and there are more and more green hotels to be found. Here are a few tips that make a big difference:

  • Use the courtesy van at your hotel.

  • Don’t change the linens and towels daily. Most hotels will ask, but just in case, mention it when you check in.

  • Just like at home, turn the faucet off when you brush your teeth.

  • Turn off all lights and appliances, and close the draperies when you leave the room.

  • Recycle at the hotel. If it doesn’t appear to be available, ask.

  • Leave the little bottles of amenities in the guestroom if unopened. If you open them, take them home and finish using them.

  • Recycle the newspaper provided by the hotel, or leave it out for someone else to read.

  • Turn off all exercise equipment, televisions, Jacuzzis, tennis court lights, etc., after use.

Before you leave your house:
Here are a few things you can do around your home before you take that trip to help make you green before you go.

  • Turn the temperature on your water heater to the lowest setting.

  • Turn off the air conditioning or heat.

  • Unplug all appliances, including televisions and stereos. Many appliances leak electricity and can draw as much as 40 watts an hour.

  • Turn off all lights and appliances, and close the draperies when you leave the room.

  • Call your newspaper provider and ask that they suspend delivery.
