Thursday. Filmmaker appearance.”Manda Bala (Send a Bullet)” was one of 2007’s best films and, to this critic, that year’s finest documentary. First-time director-producer Jason Kohn weaves a mezmerizing tale of corruption in Brazil. Delving into São Paolo’s abject class disparity, the movie features (among others): a plastic surgeon who specializes in ear reconstruction, a kidnap victim whose ear was cut off and sent to her family, a frog farmer whose fascinating enterprise has links to a venal politician, and a kidnapper who defends his crimes as being those of a Robin Hood. Kohn and gifted cinematographer Heloísa Passos won Sundance 2007’s top documentary prizes. In April, “Manda Bala” took home top awards at the inaugural Cinema Eye Honors for nonfiction film. Yet, if you blinked, you likely missed its theatrical run in Denver last fall. Kohn is in town to remedy that with a one-night-only screening, a Q&A and reception at the Denver Film Society’s monthly DocNight, 7 p.m. Thursday. Starz FilmCenter at the Tivoli, Ninth and Auraria Parkway. $6-$9.50. 303-820-FILM, www.denverfilm.org. Lisa Kennedy
