Today starts a cooldown for Colorado weather, but late afternoon thunderstorms should sweep across the eastern plains again today.

Mostly cloudy skies will bring a 20 percent chance of afternoon thunderstorms to Denver today as the high temperature reaches about 79 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Afternoon thunderstorms today should hit east of the I-25 corridor and could unleash one-inch diameter hail, hard rains and strong winds, the weather service warns.

Tomorrow’s weather in Denver should mirror today’s, with mostly cloudy skies, a 30 percent chance of afternoon storms and a high near 74, the weather service said.

A strong cold front and upper-level storm system is expected to roll into western Colorado Wednesday night setting up a cold, wet day for Denver Thursday.

Thursday’s high temperature in Denver should only hit 60 degrees and the city will stand a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms.

Light snow could fall Thursday in the mountains above the 9,500-foot level, the weather service said.

Colorado weather is expected to rebound Friday when a warming trend should start.
