Heading to the People’s Fair this weekend? We tapped our files and came up with these three swell places in the neighborhood to catch an affordable meal.
Steuben’s Food Service (pictured) 523 E. 17th Ave., 303-830-1001,
Steuben’s is a dependable uptown standby. Friendly, easy on the wallet and often crowded. Get the Cuban or po’ boy sandwich if you are trying to keep it simple. Oh, and get the fries. Definately get the fries.
El Taco De Mexico 714 Santa Fe Drive, 303-623-3926
Is this Denver’s best Mexican restaurant? It’s surely the most hard-working. Stop in before or after any downtown event for green-chile smothered plates of rellenos, burritos and enchiladas earnestly prepared in the open kitchen. It’s far from fancy, but that’s just part of the charm. So are the very reasonable prices.
Racine’s 650 Sherman St., 303-595-0418
Family in tow? Stop in at Racine’s. It’s big enough to accommodate a brood and the giant menu has something for everyone. Take your pick from diner standards, all-day breakfasts, Mexican specials and signature salads. The big bar gives adults a second, casual seating option.
It means “eleven”
Italian restaurants dot Denver’s culinary landscape like goosebumps on a scaredy-cat. Some are good, like Undici, a popular casual-but-refined spot just blocks from Arapahoe Acres and Swedish Medical Center. Classic pasta and meat dishes share the menu, with plenty of Italian wine to wash it down. Eat at the bar on busy nights. 1200 E. Hampden Ave., Englewood. Tucker Shaw
