The Rapids are done with the U.S. Open Cup after losing a “play-in” game to the Kansas City Wizards on Wednesday in Overland Park, Kan. The teams tied 2-2 through 120 minutes, and then the Wizards won 5-4 on penalty kicks.
Kurt Morsink scored the winner after Facundo Erpen had hit the crossbar with Colorado’s fourth shot.
The Rapids got their regulation goals from Herculez Gomez and Jacob Peterson. Colorado led 2-1 after Peterson’s tally in the 58th minute, but Ivan Trujillo got the equalizer in the 86th minute off a pass from Claudio Lopez, who counterattacked down the right side of the Rapids’ defense and put a cross in front of the net.
DU golfers honored.
University of Denver golfers Stephanie Sherlock and Katie Kempter were named to Golfweek Magazine’s All-American honorable mention list after helping the Pioneers to a school-record sixth-place finish at the NCAA championships last month.
CSU’s Miller to coach at Nebraska.
Diane Miller, an assistant softball coach at Colorado State since 2001, was hired in the same position at Nebraska, CSU announced.
Crush bolsters roster.
The Colorado Crush, which is still in contention for an Arena Football League playoff berth despite a 4-9 record this season, signed two players in its push toward the postseason.
The Crush re-signed wide receiver Wendell Williams, a player it cut from the practice squad before the 2007 season.
The team also signed defensive back Michael Bragg, who previously was on the Los Angeles Avengers’ training camp roster before this season.
