SILVERTHORNE, Colo.—A 6-foot-wide sinkhole has opened on Interstate 70 near Silverthorne, forcing highway officials to close the right-hand westbound lane.

The state Department of Transportation said crews were assessing the damage Thursday afternoon.

CDOT says the sinkhole is above a culvert and is about 4 feet deep. It is about 55 miles west of Denver.

In February, a 40-foot-wide, 16-foot-deep sinkhole opened on Interstate 25 north of downtown Denver when a major water line broke.

In 2003, a 22-foot-wide sinkhole opened in westbound lanes of I-70 near Vail.
