The Summer Words Literary Festival, held each year in Aspen, will feature author Salman Rushdie as the festival honors the writers of India on June 22-26. Rushdie will be given the 2008 Aspen Prize for Literature.
Six of India’s most respected authors also will be on hand — Anita Rau Badami, David Davidar, Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, Indu Sundaresan, Manil Suri and Shashi Tharoor.
The festival allows the public to engage the authors in dialogues and gives behind-the- scenes glimpses into the publishing industry with discussions, panel discussions and craft talks.
In addition to the festival, a morning writing retreat features four-day workshops and two-day classes. Among the retreat faculty are authors Sue Miller, Robert Pinsky, Douglas Bauer, Richard Bausch, Jan Greenberg, William Loizeaux, Pamela Painter, Nic Pizzolat and Cerena Thompson.
The festival wil be held at the Belly Up performance venue. Festival passes (five-day individual, $200; members, $150; retreat, $175; private consultations, $35 for a 15-minute meeting) are available at 970-925-3122 or .
