A 51-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in bilking more than $1 million from Medicaid.

Daniel Arnold of D&D Medical of Aurora billed Colorado Medicaid for repairs to wheelchairs that never took place or overcharged the agency for minor repairs, according to Colorado Attorney General John Suthers.

“While Mr. Arnold’s actions deprived the state of significant funds, his most egregious offense was depriving vulnerable citizens of the services on which they rely,” Suthers said.

An Adams County grand jury indicted Arnold on September 14, 2006, he said. Arnold owned and managed D&D, which supplied wheelchairs and parts, and also repaired power wheelchairs.

Company employees allegedly printed false work orders and documented false repair times to permit the unjustified billing. Arnold was also accused of falsifying manufacturer invoices to inflate the company’s reimbursement for new wheelchairs and their parts and accessories.

On March 30, 2008, Arnold pleaded guilty to four felony counts, including violation of the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act, forgery, and theft.

Under the plea agreement, Arnold is required to pay over $1 million in restitution to the State.
