Firefighters in Colorado Springs were able to extinguish a small wildfire that broke out in grass and scrub oak near Cheyenne Mountain about 4- 1/2 hours after it started Friday afternoon.

The fire that scorched about 4 acres crept to within 300 yards of homes. Colorado Springs Fire Lt. Jesse Kruckeberg says the fire did not burn aggressively.

The fire was near the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

It was reported by a bystander just before 12:30 p.m. Friday.

A single-engine air tanker dropped retardant to help firefighters.

Fire crews from Fort Carson, NORAD, El Paso County and a Hot Shot crew from the Forest Service responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
