A 6-year-old boy drowned last night in a pond at Lakes at Monaco Pointe apartment complex as his parents were moving into a new apartment there.
The Denver Coroner’s Office is performing an autopsy on Orion Colligan this morning, officials say.
Police were called to the apartment complex with two ponds at about after 5 p.m. yesterday on a report of a missing child. The boy’s parents lost track of him.
“They were in the process of unpacking,” according to Alex Paez, Denver fire spokesman.
Firefighters were called to the complex at 6:20 p.m. after a neighbor said they may have spotted the child near one of the ponds, Paez said.
The pond is only about 4-feet deep but it was too murky to see the bottom, he said. Searchers waded through the pond searching for the child.
Divers found the body about 20 minutes later about 6 feet from the edge of the donut-shaped pond with an island in the middle.
The boy was rushed to a local hospital, Paez said.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
