WELLINGTON — A 43-year-old man apparently fell out of a canoe and drowned Friday while trying to install a water gauge, authorities say.

The man went to the pond at the 11200 block of North Taft Hill Road in Wellington at 3:30 p.m. and never returned to his home, said Don Nadow, Larimer County Sheriff’s Department spokesman.

Six hours later, the sheriff’s office began looking for him, Nadow said. Searchers recovered his body about 30 feet from shore below a canoe where the water was up to 8 feet deep at about 10:45 p.m., he said.

“He went out on a canoe, and they think he lost his balance and fell in and didn’t have a life jacket,” Nadow said.

The identity of the victim has not been released pending identification.
