ST. LOUIS — Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright will be placed on the 15-day disabled list today.

Wainwright injured his right middle finger while pitching in Houston on Saturday. He was examined Monday and found to have a sprain. It wasn’t immediately clear how many starts Wainwright would miss. The Cardinals said the the move will be retroactive to Sunday.

Also, the Cardinals announced that three other players battling injuries — pitchers Joel Piñeiro and Todd Wellemeyer and outfielder Rick Ankiel — likely will rejoin the team this week in Cincinnati. The Cardinals and Reds open a three-game series tonight.

Footnotes.

Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks was placed on the 15-day DL because of a sprained left knee. Infielder Hernan Iribarren will be recalled from Triple-A Nashville (Tenn.) and join the team today in Houston.

• Mets outfielder Ryan Church will go on the DL today, still slowed by the effects of a concussion nearly three weeks ago.

• The Indians recalled infielder Josh Barfield from Triple-A Buffalo (N.Y.) and demoted Asdurbal Cabrera.

• The Red Sox are moving up the starting times of two games against Baltimore this week so Boston fans will not have to choose between watching baseball and the Celtics in the NBA Finals. Games tonight and Thursday at Fenway Park are now scheduled to begin one hour earlier at 4:05 p.m. MDT.

• The Mariners fired hitting coach Jeff Pentland and replaced him with special assistant Lee Elia.
