DENVER—Voters in Centennial have backed a plan to become a home rule city.
The change allows the south Denver suburb to operate under its own constitution, called a home rule charter, rather than the statewide municipal code. The switch to home rule passed by a margin of more than 2-to-1 in a mail-in election that closed Tuesday.
Centennial, which incorporated in 2001, will now be able to make sure sales tax revenue from local businesses is paid to city hall rather than neighboring cities.
The city clerk and treasurer will also now be appointed rather than picked by voters.
About a third of the state’s 270 municipalities operate under their own local constitutions, known as home rule charters.
