A man was seriously injured late last night when the semi-tractor trailer he was driving rolled in Grand County, rupturing two tanks and spilling 5,000 gallons of regular unleaded gasoline and diesel fuel.
Kevin L. Spriggs, 44, of Denver was taken by ambulance to Grand Medical Center in Granby and later flown to St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver, said Gilbert Mares, spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol.
Highway 40 was closed from Parshall to Hot Sulphur Springs until about 3 p.m. today. Authorities do not believe the diesel fuel or gasoline spilled into the nearby Colorado River, Mares said.
Spriggs was driving a white 2006 Volvo conventional truck tractor that was pulling a tanker west on Highway 40 in Byers Canyon when he went off the right side of the road on a turn and struck a guardrail, Mares said.
The truck rolled onto its top, partially on the roadway.
An investigation is ongoing. A CSP hazardous materials team has responded to manage the clean-up process, Mares said.
