Just two months ago, NBC’s Tim Russert was feted at the Denver Press Club.

He was honored as the 2008 Damon Runyon Award winner.

On April 13, he spoke before an audience of 700, defending the media and championing its right to demand answers from politicians on Iraq, energy, the environment and more.

He called it an obligation, one that’s good for democracy.

Mayor John Hickenlooper proclaimed it Tim Russert Day, saying, “You know, we don’t just do this for everyone.”

Russert was hopeful in April that the Democratic nomination process would go all the way to Denver, wanting to break the all-time record of 103 ballots, which was set at the 1924 Democratic National Convention in New York City.
