The kids don’t need to buy anything for Father’s Day. Really, there is nothing better than golf in HD . . . especially Tiger Woods in the hunt for a major championship at Torrey Pines in HD.
How much did the PGA Tour miss him those two months he was out following arthroscopic knee surgery? Oh, I don’t know. Do you think Sergio Garcia should have had more to contend with to win the so-called “fifth major” at the TPC Sawgrass course than Paul Goydos? Tiger Woods is to golf what no other athlete is to his sport.
The question today is, who comes closest to Woods in the major team sports in this country?
Kobe Bryant is the closest we can get to Tiger in basketball. He’s the best player, and he provides those special highlight moments few can deliver.
But this is the first season Bryant actually has won the league’s MVP award. Tiger is the tour’s player of the year every year, and he probably will win it again in 2008 despite missing two months.
In the NHL, we have a fairly easy choice. Sports fans who didn’t know much about Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby at least learned a little about this amazing 20-year-old during the Stanley Cup Finals.
Major League Baseball is the hardest place to find a Tiger. The best all-around player for the last decade has been the Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez, but his lack of appeal and his void of postseason success keep us from putting him into a class with Tiger.
It can be argued that the NFL just lost its Tiger when Green Bay’s Brett Favre retired.
