ASPEN, Colo.—A report prepared for Aspen planners says the resort town faces significant pollution challenges from tourism and from construction of second homes.
The report, by two consultant groups, says cars, jets and trucks serving the tourism industry are emitting carbon dioxide, and the town’s infrastructure can’t adequately handle storm water.
The report says construction projects account for about 25 percent of the waste and pollutants being poured into the landfill each year.
The report cites some positives as well. It says the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority carries more than 4 million passengers per year, helping to reduce traffic.
It also says voters approved a $12 million property tax increase to fund improvements to carry storm water.
