GUATEMALA CITY — The review of 2,286 pending adoptions in Guatemala will take at least another month because many birth mothers have not been found, an official said Thursday.

National Adoptions Council spokesman Rudy Zepeda said only 900 cases have been reviewed since May, when authorities began a probe on all pending adoptions after finding irregularities.

Birth mothers have to personally tell authorities they are giving up their children willingly before the cases can continue. The new rule is part of a government effort to ensure that children put up for adoption aren’t bought or stolen.
