Bad luck became a domino effect, killing a critical fifth-inning rally for the Rockies.
With no outs and runners at second and third, Willy Taveras hit the ball to the type of place that spoiled an uprising. Taveras grounded to third baseman Alex Gordon, who was playing in to guard against the bunt. Chris Iannetta got caught and was unable to get back to the bag. He was tagged, and Gordon fired to first to easily nail Taveras after he stumbled.
Still cooking.
Jeff Baker, NL player of the week after batting .423 on the recent homestand, extended his career-high hitting streak to nine games with a fifth-inning RBI single. “I am staying on the ball longer, and it’s opening up the whole field,” he said.
Walk this way.
Brad Hawpe’s string of six consecutive walks ended with a sixth-inning strikeout.
