The Denver City Council declined Monday night to slow down an effort by the city’s forestry division to impose fines on those who neglect to care for trees in the public right of way.
Councilwoman Marcia Johnson had wanted the forestry division to hold public hearings and then come back before the council in October to seek the authority to impose the new fines, which have sparked concerns among advocates for the poor and elderly.
The council rejected Johnson’s effort on an eight to five vote. Brown, Faatz, and councilmembers Rick Garcia and Paul Lopez supported Johnson’s push.
Jude O’Connor, the city’s forester and director of natural resources, told the council her staff would educate the public before putting the new fines in place.
