The father suspected of killing his young sons Sunday had tried to kill himself before wielding a knife at sheriff’s deputies and taking a fatal bullet.
Scott Allen Montgomery, 37, “had several self-inflicted wounds and blood was everywhere,” said El Paso County Sheriff’s Lt. Lari Sevene on Monday.
El Paso County deputies initially thought the boys, 5-year-old Skyler and 21-month-old Canyon, had been gravely injured.
The children, however, had no visible injuries and authorities are waiting on toxicology reports to determine how they died, Sevene said.
The children’s mother, Carrie Montgomery, had called the Sheriff’s Office Sunday afternoon concerned about her children because of troubling statements her estranged husband had made, investigators said.
Scott Montgomery was charged with domestic violence in May. He had entered a not-guilty plea. Similar charges against Montgomery last November were dismissed, according to Colorado Bureau of Investigation records.
When deputies arrived at the home on Waterfall Loop in the gated community in the hills above Manitou Springs, they knocked on the door but got no answer. When they looked in a window, they saw the two children in a pool of blood and kicked in the door, Sevene said.
Within seconds Montgomery confronted them with a knife and was shot dead.
The two deputies are on standard administrative leave, as the El Paso County district attorney’s office reviews the shooting, Sevene said.
