The new principal at Greeley Central High School resigned Monday amid allegations he was having an affair during school hours.

Mark Rangel quit after residents wrote letters to Greeley-Evans School District 6 board members that detailed an affair between Rangel and another school-district employee, according to school officials.

The board received the letters last week and approached Rangel over the weekend, after he returned from a vacation in Mexico.

The District 6 employee, who has not been named, also resigned Monday. She worked in special education.

Rangel could not be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.

The residents stated in their letters that Rangel was meeting with the woman during school hours over the course of two years at an apartment. It’s not clear who owned the apartment.

The letter writers do not have children who attend the school district.

Rangel is married and has three children, according to the Heath Middle School website. He had been principal at the middle school and was scheduled to start at Greeley Central High in July.

Board members declined to comment on Rangel’s resignation. The district plans to appoint an interim principal at the high school and look for a permanent replacement in the fall.
