Aurora police are offering a $2,000 reward to find out who shot a man in the head in the Cherry Grove East Apartments Monday evening.

Police have identified the dead man, who is in his 20s, but have not released his name because officers have not been able to contact his next of kin as of Tuesday afternoon.

Early leads ran cold and investigators are “pleading with the public” for tips, said Detective Bob Friel.

The shooting happened at about 6:15 p.m. at First Avenue and busy Sable Boulevard.

“We believe there was heavy foot traffic in the area and heavy and also vehicular traffic, so we believe there are witnesses out there who have not come forward,” Friel said.

After he was shot, the man fell near a Cadillac sedan that police believe is connected to the case. Evidence has been taken from the Cadillac, but Friel would not elaborate. Police also are not yet sure where the victim lived, he said.

The only description of the shooter is that he or she might have been driving a dark sedan that sped way erratically. The car may have carried two or three people, according to sketchy accounts from about a dozen people in the area that police interview so far, he said.

Friel said anyone in the area who saw a car driving erratically around 6:15 p.m. should call police.

“This was a violent crime that occurred; this young man was hot in the head, and we’re very concerned that we’ve got a killer who’s still out there,” Friel said.

Anyone with information should call Detective Craig Appel at 303-739-6207 or e-mail him at cappel@auroragov.org.
