UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. security chief resigned Tuesday over recent terror blasts in Algeria that killed 17 U.N. staffers after experts found weaknesses in the world organization’s overall security operations.

David Veness, the U.N.’s undersecretary-general for security and safety, offered his resignation and “was willing to shoulder full responsibility for any security lapse that may have occurred” Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said.
