Seven years after incorporation, Centennial has its on public works department — sort of.

The services had been previously performed by Arapahoe County. Today, Centennial celebrated its new city-managed public works department, even though the actual work will be done by CH2M HILL OMI, the company contracted to provide all the services.

“As our city has grown, so has our ability to effectively and efficiently manage a broader range of services for Centennial citizens,” City Manager Jacque Wedding-Scott said in a written statement.

After a brief ceremony, crews got to work around the city, patching potholes, mowing weeds, marking roads and crosswalks, and more.

The partnership will be guided under a five-year contract — worth about $4 million for the remainder of 2008 and about $8.6 million in 2009.
