The only thing stopping Willy Taveras on Tuesday night was a strained left quadriceps. Taveras, the majors’ leading base-stealer with 38, singled, swiped second, stole third and scored during the Rockies’ four-run fifth inning. But Taveras didn’t take his place in center field in the sixth inning and was replaced by Scott Podsednik. Taveras said he “felt a little pull” in his left quad when he stole third base. “I don’t think it’s too bad,” he said. “We’ll see how it feels tomorrow.” Taveras was limited to 97 games last season, in large part because he strained his right quadriceps. “This is nothing like that, not nearly as bad,” he said.
Bat man.
Rockies starter Aaron Cook continues to help his cause by taking care of business at the plate. He singled sharply to left in the third inning and laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt in the fifth. Cook is hitting .265 this season.
Bowers up, Speier down.
Needing another left-hander in the bullpen, the Rockies brought up 30-year-old Cedrick Bowers from Colorado Springs and optioned pitcher Ryan Speier to the Triple-A club. Bowers, making his first trip to the big leagues, posted a 4-1 record and a 2.97 ERA with the Sky Sox.
