King Soopers on Wednesday expanded the variety of ground beef it is recalling because of concerns it might be contaminated with E. coli.

The company said it was recalling all Angus ground beef sold in the chain’s self-service refrigerated cases with “sell by” dates from June 20 to July 3.

On Tuesday, the company said it was recalling 1-pound packages of its Private Selection 91 percent lean natural ground beef, also sold in the self-service case, and any ground Angus beef sold at the full-service counter with similar “sell by” dates. The recall affected 142 stores in Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming and Utah.

The recall covers both King Soopers and City Market stores in Colorado.

The recall is in response to a much larger recall of ground beef that originated at Nebraska Beef in Omaha. The recalled meat — more than a half-million pounds of it — has been linked to illnesses in Michigan and Ohio. No illnesses have been reported in Colorado.

Consumers are urged to check freezers and return the product to the store for a refund or replacement.
