DENVER—Two Colorado congressmen say it’s “unacceptable” that federal officials haven’t yet produced a plan to ensure that safe air tankers are available for firefighting.

Reps. Mark Udall and John Salazar, both Democrats, said Thursday the plan was promised a year ago.

Udall says that Agriculture Secretary Edward Schafer’s most recent response was that a plan would be available shortly. Udall calls that an empty promise.

He and Salazar say the wildfire season is under way and the status of the air tankers should have a high priority.
