At least eight people fell ill after fumes from dirt excavated along with fuel tanks wafted into a Wheat Ridge nursing home today.

“Some folks were moving fuel tanks without a permit,” said Wheat Ridge Police Department spokeswoman Lisa Stigall. She didn’t know who was excavating the fuel tanks.

The illnesses at Wheat Ridge Manor, at 29th Avenue and Fenton Street, are not life-threatening.

The occupants of the nursing home have been moved to part of the facility furthest from the tanks and were being treated by emergency personnel, Stigall said.

A Jefferson County Hazardous Materials team was called to the scene, and traffic is being diverted around the site.
