A Larimer County sheriff’s deputy was injured Tuesday night by a man he was trying to arrest.
A fight between a man and woman who are roommates was reported about 8:30 p.m. When the deputy arrived at the residence in the 2000 block of North College Avenue, he saw a man who appeared to be the subject of the call.
The man was yelling at the deputy as he came closer, then the man started swinging “a nylon strap wrapped in electrical tape with a heavy metal clasp on one end,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a new release.
The deputy tried unsuccessfully to use his Taser, and then he took out his night stick.
At that point, the man hit the deputy in the head with the strap, leaving two cuts.
Other deputies were able to use a Taser on the man, identified as 46-year-old Robert Tracy Morris of Fort Collins.
He was treated at Poudre Valley Hospital and booked into jail on charges including second-degree assault.
The woman was not injured, and the deputy was treated and released.
The sheriff’s department noted in its release that Morris had “an extensive criminal history in Larimer County from 1999 to 2001, including two assault charges, menacing, false imprisonment, three DUIs, larceny, burglary, cruelty toward children, weapons offense, resisting arrest and criminal mischief.”
