Taylor Phinney of Boulder is wrapping up his preparations for the Beijing Olympics at the cycling junior world championships in Cape Town, South Africa, winning his first race, the 3,000-meter individual pursuit Saturday. It’s his first world title in the event.

The 18-year-old finished in 3 minutes, 23.759 seconds, nearly four seconds ahead of Dennis Rohan of Australia.

Riptide floods Outlaws with goals.

The Los Angeles Riptide outscored the Denver Outlaws by seven goals in the second and third periods and went on to win the Major League Lacrosse game 16-6 in Carson, Calif.

Brendan Mundorf had a hand in two-thirds of the Denver goals, scoring twice and getting two assists. Drew Westervelt also had a pair of goals.

Anthony Colby of Durango rode his mountain bike up Mount Washington in New Hampshire, the highest mountain in the Northeast, in 55 minutes, 5 seconds to win Newton’s Revenge, a 7.6-mile ascent.

Colby, a native of Dedham, Mass., who lives and trains in southeast Colorado, made the ascent of the storied Mount Washington Auto Road 56 seconds faster than Phillip Gaimon of Tucker, Ga.
