COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A woman who had more than 20 horses taken from her care over three years because she had starved them has been sentenced to six months in prison.

Gina Johnston was also sentenced Friday to three months of house arrest. The 34-year-old woman was convicted of felony animal cruelty charges in March.

Photos of the animals displayed at Johnston’s sentencing showed underweight horses with visible ribs.

In 2006 and 2007, authorities took 25 horses from Johnston’s Calhan ranch, northeast of Colorado Springs.

Johnston denied starving the horses and said it was toxic water on her property that caused the weight loss.

Johnston was also convicted of animal cruelty in 2004 after four horses were taken from her home.
