WASHINGTON — A Senate committee will decide Thursday whether to help Sen. Ken Salazar extend for another year legislation blocking the Army from expanding its Piñon Canyon training site.
Salazar, a Denver Democrat, wants the Appropriations Committee to include in a military-spending bill language that would block the military from spending money on the expansion plan.
Sen. Wayne Allard, a Loveland Republican who is on the committee, objects to the moratorium. He wants the Army to have flexibility to do work that might be helpful to residents, said spokesman Steve Wymer.
An Army study examining why the expansion is needed is expected at the end of July. The Government Accountability Office will then review it.
Salazar said extending the moratorium would give Congress and residents time to review the study and decide the best option.
