DETROIT — Dallas Drake’s last act in the NHL was hoisting the Stanley Cup. Not a bad way to cap 16 seasons as a pro.

The Detroit Red Wings forward announced his retirement Tuesday, a month after he finally got to skate with hockey’s Holy Grail.

“I think it’s a good way for me to go out,” he said.

Drake, 39, said he’s still mentally fit to play, but that “the wear and tear on my body” has become impossible to ignore.

Drake has 177 goals, 300 assists and 885 penalty minutes in 1,009 regular-season games.

• The New York Rangers agreed to terms with restricted free-agent forward Dan Fritsche, who had 10 goals and 12 assists with the Columbus Blue Jackets last season.

• Phoenix Coyotes center Martin Hanzal is scheduled to have back surgery Thursday. He is expected to be ready for training camp.

Red Bulls’ Reyna to retire

NEWARK, N.J. — Former U.S. national captain and current New York Red Bulls midfielder Claudio Reyna plans to announce his retirement today.

Reyna, who will turn 35 on Sunday, has no goals or assists in 461 minutes this season.

• Ronaldinho transferred to AC Milan, leaving FC Barcelona after the club’s new coach declared the team would plan for next season without the Brazilian playmaker.

• Former Real Madrid coach Vicente del Bosque was hired to become the national soccer coach of Spain, the team Luis Aragones led to the European Championship title last month. Del Bosque agreed to a two-year contract.

Mangino gets raise, extension.

Kansas gave Mark Mangino, The Associated Press football coach of the year last season, a raise and extended his contract two years, amending his deal to up his compensation to $2.3 million per year. The contract runs through 2012.

• Notre Dame will announce its new athletic director today. The school declined to disclose who the new athletic director will be, although media reports indicated the likely choice would be Indianapolis lawyer Jack Swarbrick.

• Hal DeJulio, who played on Pete Newell’s 1949 NIT championship team at the University of San Francisco, died Saturday. He was 83.

• Oklahoma starting guard Jenna Plumley was arrested and charged with trying to steal makeup from a Wal-Mart store in Norman, Okla.

Los Angeles Lakers forward Luke Walton will undergo surgery to remove bone spurs from his right ankle Friday. A timetable for his return was not available.

• The Orlando Magic signed guard Anthony Johnson, who played last season for the Atlanta Hawks and Sacramento Kings.

• Sophia Young scored 10 of her 26 points in the third quarter and Becky Hammon added 19 as the San Antonio Silver Stars defeated the Phoenix Mercury 97-87. In the day’s other WNBA game, Lisa Willis scored a career-high 18 points, and the New York Liberty beat the Connecticut Sun 77-71.

• The 17 UCI ProTour cycling teams at the Tour de France unanimously agreed not to renew their ProTour licenses for the 2009 season.
