COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The Colorado Bureau of Investigation will conduct an investigation into spending by El Paso County District Attorney John Newsome for a side trip to a Notre Dame college football game.
Tuesday’s announcement follows a letter by state Democratic Sen. John Morse questioning the trip to South Bend, Ind., where Newsome’s alma mater, the University of Southern California, beat Notre Dame 38-0 on Oct. 20.
According to records obtained by The Gazette, Newsome repaid the county $584.90 April 24, nearly three weeks after a KOAA-TV reporter asked for his travel records. Some $699 worth of hotel rooms, a rental car, gas and per diem were questioned.
Newsome, who took the trip after traveling to Chicago with a police office to question a witness, said he welcomed the probe. The Republican is running for reelection.
