When it comes to jobs at August’s Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado first lady Jeannie Ritter and potential U.S. first lady Michelle Obama have picked a toughie: persuading convention delegates to leave the parties and the politics and get their hands dirty.
Ritter and Obama announced Wednesday that they are teaming up for a “Delegate Service Day” on Aug. 27 during the convention. The goal is to get delegates out into the community working on service projects such as cleaning up parks, reading to children and working with programs that help military families.
“This is not a gimmick,” Ritter said. “These are people who are committed to projects and have been committed to projects. These are areas where there is a real need.” She and Obama had their first meeting on the project Wednesday, during a stop Obama made in Denver.
