About a million gallons of water drained out of the city of Elizabeth’s water tank and pipe system Tuesday night after a water-line break that left the town of 1,500 completely without water for about four hours, a city official said today.
Town administrator Chris LaMay said this morning that the break was reported at about 11 p.m.
Officials were able to locate the break adjacent to an Elizabeth business complex called Running Creek Plaza where a water main passing under Running Creek ruptured.
He said repairs were begun immediately and that service has been restored to much of the town, although the water pressure remains low.
The city is having to refill the million-gallon water tank with water from underground wells that provide Elizabeth with its water, LaMay said. Pressure also needs to be restored to the pipe system.
Currently the east side of town is without service, which includes the post office, two restaurants, a shopping center and 12 multifamily units in a housing complex.
Bottled water is available at Town Hall if people need it.
LaMay said he expects service to the entire town to be restored by 4 p.m. today.
