LOS ANGELES — Terry Murray, who guided Philadelphia to the Stanley Cup Finals 11 years ago and has coached 737 regular-season NHL games, was hired late Wednesday to succeed Marc Crawford as coach of the Los Angeles Kings.

Murray, who turns 58 on Sunday, has been an assistant with the Flyers since 2003-04. He hadn’t been a head coach in the NHL since being fired by the Florida Panthers after the 2000-01 season. He has a 360- 288-89 regular-season record with Philadelphia, Washington and Florida.

• Forward Shawn Horcoff signed a six-year, $33 million contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers.

Hornets sign Posey.

Forward James Posey, who last season helped the Boston Celtics win their first NBA title since 1986, agreed to a four-year, $25 million contract with the New Orleans Hornets.

• The Cleveland Cavaliers re-signed guard Daniel Gibson, agreeing to a five-year contract.

• New York Knicks rookie forward Danilo Gallinari has a sore lower back and is listed as doubtful for the remainder of the Las Vegas summer league.

Former ASU coach Snyder has cancer

TEMPE, Ariz. — Former Arizona State football coach Bruce Snyder revealed he has cancer, though he wasn’t specific about the kind or severity. Snyder, 68, said he appreciates the public support, but he also asked for privacy.

• Wide receiver Terence Jeffers has enrolled at Vanderbilt after transferring from Connecticut. Jeffers, who led the Huskies with 44 catches in 2007, won’t be able to play for the Commodores this season because of NCAA rules.

• Florida State’s Buster Posey won USA Baseball’s Golden Spikes Award, becoming just the second catcher to be honored as the nation’s top amateur player.

Packers allege tampering.

The Green Bay Packers have filed tampering charges against the Minnesota Vikings over what team officials believe is inappropriate contact with quarterback Brett Favre.

Meanwhile, Favre’s agent, Bus Cook, told ESPN that he and Favre have “no definite plans to ask for reinstatement” and it was up to the Packers to decide what to do next. “It’s their move,” Cook said.

• Miami Dolphins quarterback Josh McCown, who needed six stitches on the index finger of his throwing hand after a brush with a chain saw two weeks ago, is expected to be ready for training camp next week.

• The Detroit Shock nearly blew a 23-point lead but hung on to defeat the Chicago Sky 66-63.

• Chivas USA midfielder Raphael Wicky had surgery on his right ankle and is expected to be sidelined for at least three months.

• Quarterback Matt Barkley of Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, Calif., and middle distance runner Chanelle Price of Easton (Pa.) Area High were honored as national high school athletes of the year.
