For sale: Row 18, seats 1 to 4 at Red Rocks.
Music fans, concertgoers and folks who just love the mystique of Red Rocks Amphitheatre can’t own a piece of the rocks, but they can make off with bench seating from the world-famous concert venue.
“The type of people who are buying these are huge music lovers who have probably seen more than one show at Red Rocks and who are emotionally attached to the venue as well as the artists,” said Jenny Schiavone, a Red Rocks spokeswoman.
The city of Denver, which owns the amphitheater, has been auctioning off sections of redwood benching as Red Rocks seating undergoes a face lift.
Red Rocks fans wanting to own a piece of history can make bids through an online auction. But be warned, the benches are running higher than premium concert tickets.
Bids checked online this morning were between $185 and $264 for seating sections. Sales tax also will be tagged onto the purchase.
Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Preserve the Rocks Fund and go back into the venue.
“It’s for keeping Red Rocks beautiful and preserving it for generations to come,” Schiavone said.
The bench pieces, sold in lots, measure about 30 inches wide and range up to 10 feet in length.
Many of the original pieces, dating back to 1941, have seat numbers stamped into them, and some have stamps or small plaques that indicate the row.
Of course, the lumber is weathered. Envision U2’s legendary show in the rain and fog from June 1983 captured in the “Under the Blood Red Sky” video.
Once purchased, the pieces of history will not be shipped. Proud new owners of Red Rocks bench seating will have to pick up their lumber at a warehouse on Brighton Boulevard in Denver.
The auction ends at 5 p.m. Saturday. To bid, go to www.Success-Auctions.com.
“We are very excited about it,” Schiavone said. “We’re aware people have a sort of sentimental attachment to things like this. We don’t want to throw away this beautiful lumber.”
