HOUSTON — Southwest Airlines prides itself on consistent profits and consistent service. Then there’s Southwest Flight 2709 from Houston to San Diego — late 100 percent of the time during May, according to the latest Bureau of Transportation Statistics report.

Southwest spokesman Chris Mainz said in an e-mail that this flight illustrates why “there are oh-so-many factors working against you.”

The plane begins each weekday at New York’s Long Island MacArthur Airport, where it’s parked overnight in a remote area. It’s usually late when it reaches its first destination, Chicago’s Midway Airport, the carrier said. After a full crew change, it goes on to Houston’s Hobby Airport, where it has another crew change. And the oft-full flight takes awhile to load for its journey to San Diego.

Although Flight 2709 has been on time this week — it made up time between Chicago and Houston on Tuesday, according to — Mainz said it could show up again among June’s laggards. Bill Hensel, Houston Chronicle; Associated Press file photo
